gosh, its been an age since I have been on this forum, SO much has happened in my life and with that my camera has dated (Canon 30d with sigma lenses macro 105mm/2.5 dg ex and canon speedlite 430exII plus a sigma 28mm to 300mm zoom with f of 3.5 only)

Im no professional photographer but just love the hobby of it and am wanting to continue uploading pics to dreamstime (although haven't for a LONG time due to various reasons)

Anyway looking at getting the canon G12 -
3 queries

1. should I keep my canon speedlite to go with it or is it incompatible?
2. are the images with a G12 good enough for stock photography
3. how much could I get for the whole package above (my old 30 D, kit lens, 2 sigma lenses, sigma cable release (new) and if not needed canon speedlite (also pretty new and untouched) plus camera bag....what would you advertise it for? am I being silly? who knows, maybe it will be a difficult sell anyway but I am hoping the whole package at the cost of a canon G12 could be enough to get me that camera?

The 60D would be the logical upgrade for you, but if you dont want to spend that much you could go to a Rebel, even the T3 has a larger and much better sensor than the G12.

If the problem is that you want something compact, the G1X is a new line of Canon cameras with a large sensor in a compact point and shoot size.

I wouldnt go to the G12, I think its not a really point and shoot size camera, its not inexpensive and uses a point and shoot small sensor, so you are in a middle ground where you dont have the benefits of any of the sides.

If you are thinking about the G12, I would say, stay with the 30D, it will give you much better results and spare the money to invest in better lenses.

But thats just my opinion.

Best luck to you!

Ditto on what Afagundes said...I have the 60D and love it. Of course budget is a factor but keep in mind that as mentioned you are in middle ground. You are limited to the lens the G12 has.
I would venture as far as saying do some research with Sigma and find out if your lenses are compatible with the new 60D...sell the old body and keep the lenses and the speedlite for sure.
Good luck!!

1. The 430EX flash works fine on a G12.
2. The images are OK, but very limited compared to your current kit. I have owned a 40D and the G12, and I would not move to the G12 if taking MORE stock photos is your goal - unless you never take the camera out because it is too big.
3. I honestly think that unless you can find yourself a local buyer, you'll loses money trading to a G12.

Except for portability, I don't see a G12 making any improvement in a stock portfolio. What is the issue you are trying to solve by moving to a G12?

my main issue (now i will get personal) is that I was diagnosed with a brain tumor (glioma, malignant) in 2009 april, since then I haven't contributed many pics at all as I am on meds that give me a bit of a tremor and i can't be bothered always setting up a tripod. I always loved moving freely with my camera and going in close. A lot of my images have been rejected for camera shake and lack of enough focus - sometimes though i think I am just lazy. My focus in life has shifted BUT I AM VERY SENTIMENTAL for some reason regarding this camera as its given me SO MUCH JOY, HOWEVER, technologically I feel I am being left behind. Re the G12 that is my one fear, the lack of lens interchange, and I have always loved macro photography. My consideration of move was more for convenience I think as I tend not to pull out the big camera and have it at hand for quick gorgeous snaps. I do still want to upload pics if I can. So image stabiliser, ease of use and convenience important aswell as expense as I am not working! I will look into some of the cameras mentioned above but budget is also a issue for me - I think i am going to have to write a list of pros and cons and make a decision, something I am useless at! Maybe I should sell my 30D with the kit lens and something else in my package and see whether that would cover the cost of a 60D? Ill check it out - thank you all for your time. PS do any of you know whether the sigma lenses for a 30D are compatible with a 60D.
