Hope you can all help. I have decided to try to create vector images. I have downloaded Inkscape.
At some point I will need to upload the fruits of my labours, and need to know what limitations we have. I have done a little reading around, and have not quite got to grips how to use Inkscape in relation to microstock
I have been saving my files as Inkscape SVG.
Question One:How do I save them for Microstock> Do you need a JPG and a 'vector file' (eps?? SVG??)
Question Two:Also I recall reading somewhere that vector files for microstock cannot have gradient fills (and transparency, whatever that is? opacity amount??). Is this correct?
Question Three: Finally (for now), in inkscape how do I finish my image? When I am designing, I have the original document with all the shapes and paths on this. Some shapes and paths overlap the boundaries of the document, so how do I chop everything to size, or line things up with the edge of the document.
Please answer only in relation to Inkscape.
Also, I would like to see what Inkscape is capable of and would like to see some of your work that was created with Inkscape only.
Thank you all

Here's a few tips.
1. To save for stock it must be a jpg. You have to use another program to do so. Save as svg or bmp and open in the other program. I use paintshop pro, it was affordable and did the job.
2. Close paths: path then union for saving it for vector use; eps.
3. You cannot make gradients, blurs, transparency's or pattern backgrounds for saving eps files it just doesn't work. I work around it by creating shadows or such in other ways. You can make patterned backgrounds by making bmp copy of a pattern background than run bmp trace.
4. To save as eps go to file/save as/type in name for file/ right hand bottom press arrow and scroll down till you see eps file and save. (make sure you have closed all paths first see #2.)
Using this program you have to be creative to work around not being able to use fancy things like in #3.
It's a good program to start in or if you cannot afford the expensive program that others use.
If needing a program to save jpg files there are free programs online, others would be glad to refer you to I believe.
Pesonally I create some vector "eps files and some jpg. If I use fancy #3's I cannot save as eps. I just sell them as jpg files.
Have fun creating! |

Hey thanks for your reply. All the info is very helpful and answered all my questions. I was a little ambitious with some of my first efforts and they all have gradients, so I will save/convert them to a raster format and upload them here eventually.
I now need a good tutorial about giving objects depth without using gradients, I can't visualise that easily, so will need to cheat by being shown how it is done. Off to look for some now.
I had a look through your port to get an idea of what can be achieved and am V. impressed with what you have done.
thanks for your help. |

You can add depth by adding a darker shade where needed or light colors as reflects were light would hit. It's all about playing with color.
Example: http://www.dreamstime.com/stock-photo-bee-logo-image9064200
I used darker yellow for bee on outer edges and light color were light may hit.
Using the tool pen works well too for not making it like it has to be perfect. |

I haven't tried saving in eps format using Inkscape yet. I'll have to try. If you want a good program to convert the bmp or png files you make in Inkscapre, try downloading. Gimp. It's free and works good for many things. |

Does any one know:
Would Gimp be able to save SVG files from inkscape in EPS without the loss of transparency and blur effects to enable compatibility with uploading to DT? |

Hello!
No, unfortunately you can't. You have to draw without transparencies & blurs if you want to upload also the EPS file. You can save the EPS file directly from Inkscape. |

Yeah figured as much. Ho hum... Perhaps a later release of inkscape will have the problem fixed one day... here's hoping.

Hi!
I started to use inkscape about a month ago, I think I can help you!
1. save your file as svg file and then use gimp (or, as I just read here, paint shop pro) to save it as jpg. however you have to know that the inkscape's effect have some problem with gimp (gimp can't export them). You can have the same problem with a text and sometimes with stars and geometric shapes! In these two cases I suggest you to color themwith the fill tool and use the shapes obtained!
2. It's not exact. You can use also gradient, depends how you use it. for example
here or here
I used gradient, but i also use another effects who "killed" gradient. It's a risk use gradient but, if you have other programs able to transform gradient and transparencies in something beautiful, you have to risk!
3. It very simple: first of all you have to select all objects. Then you can decide to merge them together or, skip this step, shrink them until they are within the limits of the paper (that you can see in the graphic interface inkscape)! Remember: in the second case, you can minimize the object at the same time! As you know, to minimize an object, you can use the arrows corner you can see when you select the objects!
As you request, I show you some of my inkscapes' images:
you can find other images in my portfolio!
Have a good day!

I can not keep the original lines: the corners become rounded, the lines are too big and with too many nodes. I tried to adjust parameters, but I can not fix these details. |

I do not vectorize bitmaps often, but I learned that the contrast must be high so you can have good line. I saw a good tutorial on youtube, just search for "inkscape tutorial tat 2 svg". Abou the high number of nodes, I select the image, put on nodes view, hit CTRL-L some times until I make a compromise between number of nodes and lines following the original. I also fix them by hand, and take special care on the corners. I make the nodes there "corner" and adjust the handles by hand. |

Uhm....I understand. So I'll try to "prepare" the image to the vectorization before do it and adjust nodes by hand ;) thank you :) |
