Hi All,

I got a request from a buyer, to ask for a file of this image with transparent background. Out of curiosity and want to learn more, i tried to search internet about how to do it..but I can't really find a good way to do it.

anyone got some tips to share? since it is a fire, i doubt there is a good way to do it, part of the flames will need the black background to show how it looks like..so replace with another color will just make it look unnatural..

I am also curious why the buyer wants to have a transparent background.

here is the image:

   Seamless fire flames border

You could tell you potential buyer to buy it as black and just use the "screen" mode in photoshop thus making it transparent and removing the black. A buyer would use it with a transparent background to add over another picture or webpage. We can't sell images on a transparent layer that I know of and I'm sure there are many ways to do it after the sale, more than I know.

There is no way to make a JPG file with a transparent anything. If you remove the black it will be WHITE, not transparent.

It's pretty much what BCritchley mentions, ie., the image will have to be edited by the Buyer.

If you use the method BCritchley mentions (or other methods that you find), save the file as a PNG, and upload it as an additional format. PNGs are now accepted by Dreamstime, and this can open a whole new market of buyers -- not just the one person requesting the file.

Out of curiousity, would this method handle the semi transparent areas where the black is partially coming through the flames?

I have just had a go and the "screen" option method works very well at this, never tried it before but knew it to work in principal. Now I have tried it I really like the look, will have to think of some concepts now to incorporate it :-)

Interesting... Could be a great way of extracting subjects from existing isolations

1- Open your image in Photoshop
2- (Assuming you are a PC user) press ctrl+J to duplicate the background layer.
3- Now press ctrl+alt+B to open the BW dialog box.
4- Use the red and yellow sliders to make them white, but don't go too far. Press OK
5- Grab the Dodge tool from the panel on the left hand side.
6- Shift+Right click on the picture. There should pop a menu with 3 choises (highlights, midtones, darks)
7- Choose "highlights"
8- Use a %50 opacity (at the menu, on top) and use the dodge tool on the white areas to make them perfectly white. Don't force it on corners, you may get jiggy lines...(what is jiggy? I just made it up LOL)
8a- Use white brush to fill the easy parts, use dodge tool on corners, to save time :)
9- Now ctrl+A to select all the picture
10- Go to "channels" window (if not visible, find it on "Window" menu)
11- On the bottom of channels panel, find "create new channel" and click it.
12- Now we have a new channel, select it and press ctrl+V to paste your BW picture in it.
13- Press ctrl+2 to select the RGB channel or simply click on the RGB to select it, in the channels window.
14- Press ctrl+D to deselect everything.
15- Go back to the layers panel and delete the bw layer. Re-duplicate your background.
15- Again on the channels panel; Ctrl + Left click on the new channel, you just created...you should have a perfect selection of your flame.
15a- Menu>Select>Modify>Feather (%0,5 - %1) to make the jiggy lines smoother
16- Back to the Layers panel :)) select new duplicated layer, and click on the "New Mask" button on Layers panel.
17- Make the Background layer invisible...voila! :)

For further improvements, select the created mask and use "Levels" or anything you want for corners and other parts...never delete the layer, because a mask will give you much more flexibility to make changes.

I'm sorry I'm too late but this is how I isolate all my images! It's pretty fast and works like a magic on hair.

Maybe I should use this text as a blog :))

Whatever...save your image as PNG (Interlaced: NO) and upload it as an additional format. Dreamstime accepts PNG additional formats with transparency.

Cheers

...and thanks for this question, you made me write my very first blog article :)
